Please join the Southern Environmental Law Center in welcoming H. Emerson Blake, Editor-in-Chief of the award-winning Orion magazine and executive director of Orion Society, to a panel of the Virginia Festival of the Book, March 28 at 2 p.m. Blake will explore how literature and the arts go hand-in-hand with policy and legislation in the effort to protect the environment. An ecologist and former editor at Milkweed Editions, Blake has worked with the country’s foremost environmental writers and thinkers on hundreds of essays, articles and books. He serves as a judge for SELC’s annual Reed Writing Award. Winners of the 2008 award will be announced at the event, hosted at SELC offices on Charlottesville’s historic downtown mall.

The Rivanna River Sojourn
The Sojourn will launch from Charlottesville on Saturday morning, overnight at Pleasant Grove in Fluvanna. and pull out by noon on Sunday. This is a fund raising event co-sponsored by the Rivanna Conservation Society and Blue Ridge Mountain Sports. Suggested donation is $75.00 per adult and $65.00 for children under 12.

The Rivanna Conservation Society is joining with the Rivanna Trails Foundation to celebrate National Trails Day. As a part of this annual event trails will be cleaned, expanded or established along the Rivanna. At the same time, RCS will be hosting a river and streambank cleanup. Volunteers will meet at the Charlottesville Catholic School at 8:30am.

Directions: Greenbrier Park is located on the north side of Charlottesville at the intersection of Brandywine Drive and Greenbrier Drive.
From Route 250 Bypass: Take Hydraulic Road and turn right onto Brandywine Drive. Continue several blocks to the intersection with Greenbrier Drive. Proceed straight/slight veer to the right through the stop sign onto Greenbrier Drive and continue a couple blocks to the intersection of Greenbrier Drive and Kerry Lane. Park your vehicle on Greenbrier Drive or Kerry Lane. A pedestrian entrance (paved/gravel path) into the park is located across from Kerry Lane at the intersection. Follow the path to the bridge across Meadow Creek.
